I owned an '87 Savage (4 speed) for three years and now occasionally ride my wife's '96 (5 speed) so have had a chance to compare them. The 5 has better gas milage and top speed. You can get about 10 additional miles from a tank of gas. With most bikes that doesn't sound like much but with the Savage it's a big deal.
